Canistrocarpus cervicornis (Iridescent Forked Algae)

A rare gem in the macro world, Canistrocarpus cervicornis (formally Dictyota) is an easy-to-grow brown macroalgae... something you don’t hear often, as most brown algae can be notoriously difficult to maintain. Its branching, antler-like structure adds texture, while under full spectrum lighting it develops a subtle blue-green sheen that gives it an iridescent edge.

This species grows readily and establishes quickly, making it a great option for macro enthusiasts looking to expand beyond the usual reds and greens. However, with that fast growth comes a need for control.

Important:

Canistrocarpus cervicornis can become invasive in closed systems and is not recommended for refugiums or reef tanks. It is best suited for dedicated macroalgae displays where its growth can be managed and appreciated without risk of overgrowth.

Care Guide:

  • Experience Level:Easy to grow compared to most brown macroalgae
  • Light: Prefers moderate to high full spectrum lighting (enhances blue sheen)
  • Flow: Moderate flow recommended
  • Placement: Best kept in controlled, macro-focused systems, glue directly to rubble or rocks.
  • Growth Rate: Fast grower

Macro Lady Tip:

This one’s a little wild…in the best way! Treat it like a feature piece where you can enjoy it and keep it in check.
