Paddle-flap Scorpionfish (Rhinopias eschmeyeri)

A true showpiece predator, this stunning bright red Rhinopias eschmeyeri is approximately 7" and commands attention in any marine aquarium. Known for their incredible camouflage, flowing fins, and slow, deliberate movements, Rhinopias are among the most sought-after scorpionfish in the hobby.

Rhinopias eschmeyeri adapt very well to aquarium life and, despite their impressive appearance, do not require large amounts of swimming space. A tank of 40 gallons or larger is suitable, provided there are plenty of rocks, ledges, and areas where they can perch and blend into their surroundings.

Unlike active swimmers, Rhinopias spend most of their time waiting for food to come to them. They often move by making short hops across the substrate or by "walking" along the bottom using their pelvic fins. Once they find a comfortable spot, they'll settle in and rely on their incredible camouflage while patiently waiting to ambush unsuspecting prey.

Rhinopias are considered reef safe with corals, but care should be taken when selecting tankmates. They do best with larger fish that are too big to be viewed as food. Small fish, ornamental shrimp, and other bite-sized tank inhabitants will eventually become a meal. Their slow, peaceful nature makes them excellent additions to predator and specialty reef systems with appropriately sized companions.

This specimen is currently eating live fish and is a strong, healthy feeder. With patience and proper technique, Rhinopias can often be trained to accept frozen meaty foods.
